| Nichols (17) grabbed the winner |
Mariners' keeper Matt Ryan had an outstanding game as he denied the Roar attack time and time again. But it was Mitch Nichols who finally broke the deadlock have wasted a golden chance in the first half when he hit the post after rounding Ryan in the penalty box. Ryan deserved more from the match after his performance where he proved yet again that he is a quality keeper with a big future. At the other end of the park Michael Theoklitos had his own work to do and repelled the Mariners' counter attacks on a number of occasions.
Roar fans got their first real look at new signings Issey Nakajima-Farran and Besart Berisha. The Canadian winger impressed many with his dribbling skills and should settle nicely into the side in the coming weeks. Berisha worked hard but looks a little underdone at this stage and I expect to see him grow in stature as the season wears on. Bahrain international Sayed Mohamed Adnan was an unused substitute. Former Sydney winger Kofi Danning had an impressive cameo off the bench.
The lowlight of the evening was the approach of the Mariners players who resorted to some overtly physical play. Unsurprisingly Thomas Broich was the target of a kicking on more than a few occasions and the Mariners would be better served concentrating on playing football than kicking people.
There is definitely room for improvement in the Roar but the signs are promising. We've started the season in the right way and now we have to keep improving from here.
In other results today the Jets been Heart 3:2, while Victory played out a scoreless draw with Sydney.
